Single tooth dental implants
Single tooth dental implants are now the safest most common procedure in today to replace a missing tooth.
Dental implants are permanent prosthetic teeth that are attached to a titanium post that is inserted into the patient's jawbone. The titanium post will act as a root for the tooth and on top of the abutment will be placed a prosthetic crown that will exactly resemble a patients tooth. The crown will be composed of either ceramic or porcelain and can be color matched to your teeth. Therefore when you smile the fact that you have an implant will be hardly visible. The process of dental implants became a major advancement in dentistry once Per-Ingvar Brånemark, M.D., Ph.D. and his team accidentally discovered that titanium can fuse to bone in a process that was later called osseo-integration. This was discovered accidentally when they were working on the lower legs of rabbits. When they tried to remove them they discovered that they had fused. This application was then applied to dentistry.
What are the benefits of dental implants?
It is important for patients to understand that when a tooth has been removed the bone density across the jaw ridge decreases in the first year and the patient will lose 25% in the area where the tooth is removed. Loss of bone density in patients who are having one or multiple teeth removed is a serious issue and therefore bone loss can cause loss of definition in facial structure. It can cause patients to lose the ability to speak, chew and maintain nourishment from their food will become compromised. In the area where tooth loss has happened, missing teeth should be replaced not only for cosmetic reasons but also for the patients oral health and total well being.
What are the problems that can arise when teeth are removed?
When a patient is missing teeth and they are not replaced it can cause a number of problems. Initially the underlying tooth loss will create a large space that will cause neighboring teeth to fill in the gap. This can cause teeth to become out of balance. When this process happens teeth begin to extrude out of their sockets and it is possible that you can create spaces. This can lead to periodontal disease. Dental implants are a very successful way of improving patients overall smiles as well as replacing your missing teeth with dental implants patients can retain their smile and achieve optimal dental health
What does dental implant surgery consist of?
Dental implant surgery is performed by either an oral surgeon or a periodontist. Dr. Shivu is both. Initially patients will need to come to our a dental office to be evaluated. You will have a consultation for dental implants at our Astoria office where Dr. Shivu will ascertain how much bone density you have and whether you will need bone grafting before dental implants or if there is sufficient bone mass there to perform the procedure. Once he has determined that you are a possible candidate you will come attend our Astoria office for dental implants.
Initially Dr. Shivu will surgically place a dental implant composed of a titanium post into the patients jawbone. This is performed by initially removing some of the gum tissue and exposing the bone. Sophisticated dental software is used in order to strategically place the dental implant in the space. The exposed area is then covered once the implant is placed and the process of osseo-integration takes place.
